Maker’s Mark Cask Strength Background:

Maker’s Mark is a distillery isn’t known for their innovation. Or, even trying new things. They know what they do well, and they continue to do it with consistency. However, this fall Maker’s Mark released a cask strength version of their famous bourbon. Maker’s Mark last attempt at tinkering with a bourbon’s proof turned into a debacle. Whiskey blending or vatting is usually reserved for master blenders(distillers) and is a technique used primarily in the Scotch industry. However, that doesn’t have to be the case. With some spare bourbon and whiskey bottles and a few readily available tools you can be your own whiskey blender. You’re probably wondering., why should I try this? What’s the point? MGP and LDI History

Midwest Grain Products (MGP) is a grain and neutral spirit supplier based in Atchinson, KS. Lawrenceburg Distillers Indiana (LDI) is the former Seagrams distiller which was acquired by MGP in late 2011 forming MGPI. LDI was a mysterious and secretive distillery out of Indiana that didn’t reveal a lot of information about mash bills or who they were producing for. That ended quickly once they were acquired by MGPI. The new management has been very transparent (see their full list of mash bills here) and even offering information about the plans they have for the distillery. read more

Heaven Hill New Cask Strength Bourbon

So, here is one more bourbon that you will never see on a shelf. On the heels of the Elijah Craig Barrel Proof success Heaven Hill will release a barrel proof version of William Heavenhill. It will be a 15 years old bourbon and it should be interesting to see how much the additional 3 years changes the flavor profile. The proof listed is 130 but I’m sure that will change. Based on the ECBP proofs that is probably the ballpark. read more

Larceny Bourbon from Heaven Hill

Each month we try to select a bourbon of the month for a group review. We want to make the bourbon choice accessible but at the same time something you don’t see at every local liquor store. That is why we think Larceny is a great pick for the month of September. Heaven Hill released Larceny Bourbon in late 2012 and pretty soon after that speculations claiming that Heaven Hill would discontinue the Fitzgerald line were rampant. In an interview with Fred Minnick Director of Corporate Communications of Heaven Hill Distilleries Larry Kass said “No, we will keep selling Old Fitz Prime 80 proof, Old Fitz Bottled-in-Bond and Very Special Old Fitz 12 year old in current markets,” Kass says. “We are eliminating the Old Fitz 1849 SKU, but that was a very small number of cases.” This is good news since Old Fitz 12 is one my my favorites at the price (I did stock up on a few bottles just in case).
